史上首位可考據的女性高爾夫球員，是1563年在愛丁堡聖安卓打球的蘇格蘭瑪麗女王(Mary, Queen of Scots)。莫瑞伯爵(Earl of Moray)曾在瑪麗女王遭處決前呈西敏委員的控訴中，羅列瑪麗女王的諸多失檢行為，其中包括她在夫婿遭到謀殺後數日便去打高爾夫球。
